Extraction of a Baby Tooth

Extraction of a tooth means removing it from the mouth permanently.

Why does my child need an Extraction?

An extraction or removal of a tooth is recommended when the tooth cannot be restored with filling materials or even a stainless steel crown due to advanced tooth decay or dental trauma. Extracting a tooth is often the last resort after all other treatment has been considered.

The tooth may have already become so infected that it is now abscessed and causing spontaneous pain (pain that is not related to chewing or manipulating the tooth), pain that wakes your child up at night, or severe pain when biting then the tooth may need an extraction.

Extraction of teeth may also be required as part of an orthodontic problem where there is insufficient space in the jaws to accommodate all of the permanent teeth.

What else do I need to know?

  • Extracting primary teeth is usually much simpler than extracting adult teeth.
  • As always, we ensure that the tooth and surrounding structures are thoroughly numb prior to the removal.
  • Your child will be numb to any sharp or painful sensations but will still be able to feel pressure or pushing on the tooth.
  • The procedure for removing a tooth is generally pretty quick and the recovery time for children is also quick as well.
  • In some cases, a small dissolvable stitch is placed to apply pressure to the socket and reduce the potential for further bleeding.
  • After an extraction, pressure is applied to the area with a soft sterile gauze pack to stop the bleeding. You will want your child to “take it easy” for the rest of the day and relax at home.
  • Soft foods and gentle tooth brushing are recommended until the area has healed.
  • Mild pain relief medications can be given after the procedure to manage any discomfort
  • The area should usually heal within a few days.

You will be given instructions by the staff of Gainesville Dental Arts on how to care for your child after an extraction. Please call 703-743-2324 for an appointment and visit us at Gainesville Dental Arts in Gainesville.
